El Machete by Tina Modotti
I came across this photograph at the AGO one day, simply therapeutically browsing the collections and it connected with me. My imagination went back to the old western days, and this photograph was so perfect to add my own touch to it. I took a picture (of the picture) and illustrated on top of it and gave it a warmer tone to reflect Western imagery.
The Marchesa Casati
I’d recently watched Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix and was inspired by the imagery and cinematography of the film. When I came across this painting, I stopped right in my tracks and what you see on the right was my first thought. It’s a more vibrant/comedic touch the original portrait, but it just felt so natural to add that clown makeup over the painting.
